Foundation Dilemma

Foundation Dilemma 


He knows that to really get 

under the comforters


and tidy up the bed-

rock the house must be stripped


like sheets, the fitted one he has 

worked so tirelessly to keep 


cornered must be utterly de-

paired: insulation from sheetrock, 


sheetrock from studs,  

patched pipes popping 


from couplings like cut veins 

till nothing remains but a soup 


of sewage and what once was dry-  

wall. And he’d pray for such


a severing storm, even swing 

himself the sledge, could he be


sure the children would emerge

from the wreckage clear-


eyed and assuring they understood

how necessary the nightmare


to such a crisp, unshakeable morning.

Real The best yield the garden bore was before  we soiled the spot with seed, before Henbit and Bittercress became weed because we didn't plant them there, and the fence was neatly stacked  in lumber racks at the hardware store  with a pressure-treated chance at perfectly plumb.  Our significant others, too, kept their figures  firm as the flesh of a fresh cuke twenty years into our marriages  before we met them, their priorities in prim  rows well-tilled and running parallel to our own.  The summers were never dog-tick   hot, spouses always were, and our houses rarely  required repair, till we—our very real  bodies with their very real hungers tiptoeing for the ripe glint of it all at the top  of the trellis—found the beans were soft in spots and less than ideal, but still, once swimming in a thick confession of butter, infinitely more filling.

Clean Windows I hadn’t chalked it in my pocket planner— existential crisis: 8am— but plans, I’ve come to find, are quite  subservient to present things.  A pinch of pepper on my eggs,  some salt, and then does God exist?, as if I needed that to wash   it down, as if one has  to reason out this kind of thing before the second cup  of coffee. No, unwanted wondering  is not a trait I’m proud to keep sustained inside, but as it seems that we are at a tipping point of sorts, the point where cutting clean the canker kills the tree, I’ll learn  to coexist with it the best I can, if flustered at the circumstance.
